Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins, usually in the legs. They form when the one-way valves inside a vein fail, letting blood flow backwards and pool, so the vein stretches and enlarges.

Are Varicose Veins Serious?
Varicose veins are usually not life-threatening, but they are progressive. Left untreated they cause burning, throbbing pain, swelling and heaviness in the legs, and can lead to deep vein thrombosis, bleeding from a ruptured vein and non-healing venous ulcers near the ankle.
